A recent trip brought me along the back street of Via Santa Maria Delle Grazie and Lanterna Due. At 7pm it was still relatively empty so this solo diner thought she would take advantage of the open dining room. I ate light this evening, ordering only a small side salad and grilled calamari. The portion was large and the fish was tender but it had very little taste. I added the offered lemon juice but kept wishing I had a bottle of tabasco sauce to jazz it up! (Have they ever heard of tabasco sauce in Italy, LOL?)
The staff was efficient but far from warm and they looked at me like I was an alien because I asked them not to bring a bread basket. Mamma looked at me and said “But it’s free.” I just didn’t want the temptation of carbs – they just don’t get that in Italy!
I saved my carbs for dessert but my high expectations fell flat with an average chocolate cake. Sorry to say that Lanterna 2 is just another ordinary restaurant in Sorrento and at a total of €30.50 (approx $44.00 without tip) it was not worth every bite.
I’ve now eaten at three of this family’s restaurants and I can tell you that hands down the best one is Ristorante L’Abate in Piazza San Antonino. Buon Appetito!
