Mangia Monday where locals dine in Sorrento

Only living as a local can you truly find the best of anything.  Time is too short when you’re flitting from one museum to the beach and then to the spa.  So, on a recent extended stay in Sorrento, I discovered the top places for fast food Napoletano and they are off the beaten path from the main square.  These spots are located closer to the train station and Piazza Lauro.

1.  Bar Rita (Corso Italia 219) – where do I start here?  I am hooked on the polpette di melanzane (eggplant meatballs) and arancini (rice balls), but try the pannini also…..and don’t forget to end it all with a cannoli con cioccolata.  While you’re there, say hi to Imma!

2.  Square Cafe (Piazza Angelina Lauro 47) – this is a funky, little bookstore and cafe with free wi-fi.  Square offers great espresso and desserts and you can sit, browse, surf or read, inside or out.  Vegetarians will also enjoy the fresh salads and pasta dishes.  Check their calendar for book readings and music nights.

3. Panetteria Pizzeria Franco (Corso Italia 265) – You know the pizza is good when locals line up outside this tiny place, day and night, and they can often be seen carrying not one or two, but three or four pizza boxes for takeaway.

Cuore di Pizza Sorrento4.  Cuore di Pizza (Piazza Angellina Lauro 30/32) – They serve a great Pizza Margherita and with a water, lunch only ran €8 with tip and I actually took some pizza home.  Pizzas here are too much for one girl but not enough for two.   I also enjoyed the spaghetti carbonara and it was not bad at €8.
