How do you honor the women who gave you life?  In the U.S., Canada, Italy, Greece, the Caribbean and many other countries, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the 2nd Sunday in May; in France, it’s usually the last Sunday in May; and in the United Kingdom  it’s the 4th Sunday of Lent.  Each year, children the world over wonder – what can I do for the woman who has given me so much?

I remember the year I took my Mom to London – it happened to be Mum’s Day so we celebrated there with brunch.  Two months later we were home and celebrated the American holiday in May.  Mom was looking for a trifecta that year and we have a good laugh about it still.

This year, amid rising airfares in a down economy, some resorts and spas are planning wonderful girl getaways to help you with a perfect mother daughter escape.  Here are some of them and our travel concierge can assist you with booking:

Northeast US:

Cranwell Resort offers a spa getaway in the heart of The Berkshires

Cranwell Resort – in the heart of the Berkshires is offering a spa getaway which includes spa and dining credits and shopping outlet coupons.  So, while the cost of a weekend night between May and October 31st is $373 per person, you are each getting a $115 spa credit and a $50 dining credit to enjoy.

Southeast US:

One Bal Harbour Resort & Spa – is also offering moms and daughters a  girls’ getaway, the “Sun, Stay and Shop” package from $395 per night, includes a $100 spa credit, daily breakfast and car service to the chic Bal Harbour Shops.

West US:

Kenwood Inn and Spa for a luxury escape in the heart of Sonoma wine country

Anytime you can be transported to Tuscany without straying too far from home is a good thing for a weekend escape and in Sonoma County, California, the Kenwood Inn and Spa magically suits the bill.  It’s deep in the heart of wine country where grown-up girls can play and truly wine and dine in luxury at this intimate 29 room inn. For Mother’s Day getaways, there is the Bella Vita package which includes a two night stay, food and wine and two spa treatments per person (total of 4) with a Garden View room starting at just over $1,800.  Yes. some things in life are worth it, especially a luxury stay.  Call our travel concierge to help book this package.

Weekend escape to Old Montreal in Quebec

Canada:

Tourisme Montreal is offering family getaway packages through the end of this year at eight hotels in the old city with rates starting at just $115 per night (many of the hotels also include free breakfast).  If you want to save on airfare, it’s an easy five hour drive from many points in Pennsylvania, Toronto, New York and New England.  The package includes discount coupons to area attractions, restaurants and shopping.

Honorable Mentions:

For Dads who want to give their special girls a memorable day so they can watch the game there are several spots where Moms and their little ones or tweens can feel like royals for the day:

Cypress Bend Resort in Louisiana has a Princess for a Day Spa Getaway for mom and her young girls, which features overnight accommodations, tea for two followed by Mom’s choice of massage or facial treatments, including Cleopatra’s Milk & Honey wrap, and sprinkles on their toes for the weebies or tweenies, followed by breakfast the next morning.

The Homestead Spa and Resort in Hot Spring, Virginia has grown up and little princess packages to celebrate Mom’s Day.  Mom can enjoy a variety of massage and skin care treatments, while her tweenie can have a Blueberry Belle Pedicure of Vanilla Cupcake and Sprinkles Manicure.  The Homestead gets extra points for Mom-Daughter learning/bonding weekends where you can enjoy each other while learning golf, archery or horseback riding.

Ritz-Carlton Denver is having a special Mother’s Day brunch which will include a gourmet buffet, bouquet-building station and souvenir photo and gift for Mom…..kids get a special menu as well, while kids under 6 eat for free, yippee!

Grand Wailea Resort in Maui, Hawaii gets an honorable mention just because…..IT IS Hawaii, afterall.  No, seriously, the Resort is having a Mom’s Day Champagne Brunch, complete with Hula dancing on the menu.
