Frugal Friday Finds a 14th Century Romantic B & B in Tuscany

As an Italian travel concierge I pride myself on finding out of the way places, off the beaten path for our discerning clients.  Often, however, they challenge me to new heights, as was the case with a New Jersey couple who had heard about an ancient B & B which was very romantic somewhere in the hills of Tuscany.  OK, that sounds like every B & B in Tuscany, right?  Yet, they had no name and what’s more – this is not on any booking site radar.  It’s pleasantly “off the grid,” so to speak.

Romance awaits behind Monticchiello's Porta Sant'Agata

Well, with a bit of searching and the help of a good map, I tracked down La Casa di Adelina in the “villagio piccolino” of Monticchiello.  Basically, you head north of Rome toward Pienza.  If you hit Pienza, allora, you’ve gone too far because Monticchiello is about 10 km (6 miles) southeast of Pienza.

I worked with Casa di Adelina’s owner, Francesco Cresti, to arrange the perfect stay for our clients.  The building dates to the 1300s and has been in the Cresti family for 400 years, mamma mia!  The bed the happy couple slept in was 300 years old and very romantic.  And to make a great find even better, Francesco is a wonderful chef and can start your day with a hearty Tuscan breakfast or homemade pasta for dinner.  No request is too difficult.

There are apartment suites available at Casa di Adelina, as well as its sister bed and breakfast, La Cocca.  Both provide the romantic charm of the ages with modern conveniences, with rates ranging from €72 to €120, inclusive of breakfast, but rates starting at an affordable €40 for the solo traveler (Francesco’s wonderful dinner is available at an extra charge).

Cameretta at La Casa di Adelina

Most folks will rent a car to get around Tuscany and parking is easy in this tiny village.  Cortona is about 30 minutes away; Montalcino is 25 minutes and the drive to Siena is under an hour.

Contact our Italy travel consultant, or email us at info @wanderlustwomentravel.com to help make your next visit to Tuscany a memorable one – perhaps at La Casa di Adelina!  But don’t take our word for it.  See what our satisfied guests have to say.
