My luxury travel fantasy for awhile now has been Santorini, Greece. Maybe it’s because of those stunning lapis colored rooftops that sparkle atop white-washed buildings at the edge of the caldera. Maybe it’s because I’ve been told that Santorini is a lot like Italy. Maybe it’s because of the wonderful meals I had the last time I was in Greece, with fish so fresh they were smiling at me.
Then I come across a photo of a hotel like Canaves Oia and the answer is oh, so clear, It’s that stunning view without ever leaving my bed – true luxury travel. Gazing out over the sea at the start of each new day and at the end of each starry night.
The caldera in Santorini is what’s left after a volcano imploded from the weight of its eruption, about 3,600 years ago, leaving behind a lagoon on the beautiful Aegean Sea, surrounded by three towering cliffs. The 17th century Canaves (former cave houses) has been transformed into stunning suites with a direct elevator from the beach.
I am finding it hard to choose between the Honeymoon Suite, which runs between $750-1000 per night, depending on the season, or the Canaves Suite, with its private swimming pool.
Hey, can a solo traveler stay in the Honeymoon Suite? How decadent! I feel I should stay in both suites in my fantasy and use the hotel’s private yacht, Alexandros, to usher me around the inlets and nearby private beaches. I am having such a great time – I may not come back.
