Saturday Splurge in Athens like a Greek Goddess

I am all about luxury when I solo travel because I really like spoiling me, from the best hotels to spa treatments.  Now, as anyone who enjoys luxury travel knows, there are 5-star hotels and 4-star hotels masquerading as 5-star rated.  Well, I had one prerequisite when I visited Athens, it had to be a 5 star hotel and a room with a view of the Acropolis.  The Grand Bretagne did not fail to meet my expectations.  In fact, it far exceeded them.

Living like a Greek goddess at the Hotel Grand Bretagne

I was speechless when I opened the doors to my terrace.  Not only did I enjoy a view of the Acropolis, but my terrace faced Syntagma Square and I could watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier every hour (they look so cute in their traditional uniforms with pom pom shoes).  The hotel was pure magic, from the giant bed and crystal chandelier, to the restaurant and concierge who was always knowledgeable and helpful to this solo traveler.   Even the location was perfect, with a park across the street and a subway stop to take me to distant tourist spots and the Monastiraki flea market in the Plaka.

At the Grand Bretagne, I started my day each morning with a wonderful breakfast at the rooftop restaurant, soaking in my panoramic view of the Parthenon.  I thought I was on Mount Olympus itself.

Oh, and did I mention the wonderful spa?  The staff was friendly but language was an issue with some of the therapists, so ask the concierge for help in explaining your massage or facial needs if necessary.

A 5 star bathroom!

Finally, you might be wondering about my favorite thing at the Grand Bretagne……….well, after the view, it was definitely the bathroom.  I could’ve lived in it from the floor to ceiling marble to the soaking tub to the luxurious walk-in shower.  For solo travelers who like to indulge, The Grand Bretagne in Athens is the real deal………….well, maybe not a deal but definitely worth the price.
