London is my second home but fellow nomad, photographer, Cecil Lee, has dropped by this Mangia Monday for a bite of fish ‘n’ chips.
When people talk about authentic British food, they think of fish ‘n’ chips. The British love chips. They also love batter-fried fish. So when putting both together, Fish & Chips becomes their traditional dish, for lunch, and for dinner. Not only in the UK, it has also become a favorite for people around the world, including me.
Naturally, when travelers come to London for a visit, they would like to try the original recipe of this local food. There are too many restaurants offering Fish & Chips in London. but there’s a great corner spot in Covent Garden called The Rock & Sole Plaice where locals come to grab a bite.

It is located at No.47, Endell Street, London WC2H 9AJ. There is outside seating during the summer but we grabbed a table inside next to 2 police officers who were off duty, I presumed?

They have about 10 varieties of fish to choose from. We ordered 2 Cods, 1 Halibut, 1 Haddock and 1 Plaice. The portions were generous and the chips are chunky. The fish is battered nicely in a thick cornmeal batter and fried to crispy perfection, while the fish is juicy. They taste terrific! Squeeze a slice of lemon onto the fish, add some vinegar and homemade tartar sauce onto the chips and there you go!
Other than Fish & Chips, The Rock & Sole Plaice offers pies, chicken nuggets, cakes and some other snacks. The average price for a plate of Fish & Chips is around £11 and if you really want to taste what the local British eat everyday, The Rock & Sole Plaice is the restaurant to go.
