I must admit I don’t understand the romanticized fascination with Paris, the City of Lights, so I went off in search of a romantic soul to explain it to me. For Patent Attorney Charles Rattner, it’s all about the people and wandering the city’s cobbled streets, off the beaten path.
“The City of Lights mirrors Mother Nature’s mood,” he says. “When it’s sunny out, Paris is radiantly brilliant. When the skies are threatening, the city also appears gray. But when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate, there’s plenty of Parisian beauty on display indoors in its museums and historic buildings.”
So, what’s a solo traveler to do on a rare Sunday alone in this historic city? Charlie takes the Metro to Sacre Coeur, which he swears has the best panoramic views of the city. He suggests getting off at the Maison Rouge stop and then following the street signs to Sacre Coeur, where you are led to the less touristy filled entrance of the Basilica. Soak in the architecture or take in a full Latin mass but make sure you start your day with breakfast al fresco at one of the many vendors in the area. “A cafe au lait and a nutella crepe enjoyed on the steps of the Basilica in the Parisian sun is a delightful cure for any Saturday night hangover, if you can first survive the walk up the summit.”
Our solo stud in Paris says he can spend hours people watching at any given spot throughout the city but suggests you move on by taking the Metro to Charles De Gaulle Etoile, the stop for the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysees. Since you’ve already seen the best vista shot of Paris from Sacre Coeur, forego climbing the 220+ steps to the top of the Arc and instead take a leisurely stroll down the Champs Elysees for shopping, dining and even a chance at lady lucky inside the elegant Aviation Club de France for some casino style fun and games.
And how would our solo guy end this perfect day? Simple - by not going to sleep alone in the city of lights and love. Oh, ladies, cupid’s knockin’!
