Sunday Soul offers a perfect time alone along the shores of Calabria, italy

Today is Easter – a time for new beginnings, fresh starts, a resurrection.  Often, I find that those are the exact reasons I travel.  So, today, I am combining the two into a new feature for Wanderlust Women.  Sunday Soul is all about getting lost and finding yourself again, no matter where you go or what you do when you get there.  Ironically, I’ve invited some companions for this journey.  So each Sunday, whether it’s little old me or another wanderluster, we’ll focus on where we go for the perfect Sunday Soul all alone!  Today, Cherrye Moore, of My Bella Vita, takes us to her favorite beach in the Calabria region of Italy.

For many women the idea of alone time is scary. They fear the inevitable silence and uncomfortable glances of strangers and avoid solo excursions whenever possible. Yes, it is daunting, but it is also enthralling, exhilarating … liberating, and it is a milestone every confident women should strive to achieve.

I’ve been more of a solo traveler since I began my international journeys more than a decade ago and in fact, it is more of an adjustment for me to open my plans and allow room for someone else’s travel agenda, which is why I love that in my adopted hometown of Catanzaro, Italy-I don’t have to share my space.

Once springtime hits and the warm-weather wind starts blowing over the Ionian, Sea I like to spend my Sundays on the Catanzaro Lido lungomare.  The promenade, nearly destroyed in recent years from hurricane-force winds and waves, stretches along the lightly pebbled sand of Catanzaro’s shores. On Sunday mornings, Moroccan merchants line the boardwalk, selling everything from handmade figurines to costume jewelry to straw shoes and purses.

Sunbrellas look like ice pops of relief along Catanzaro Lido

I like to sit on one of the half-moon seats and watch the tiny tots ride their pint-sized bicycles, as their parents stroll several paces behind them. Generations of Calabrians – grandparents, parents and children – stop at one of the lemon-slice benches in what appears to be a heated argument, but in reality is a passionate description of their latest endeavors.

Sometimes … ok, usually, I’ll walk to my favorite gelateria and treat myself to a heaping scoop of pistachio and spagnolo gelato because everyone knows weekend calories in Calabria don’t count. Then, I continue with my lesson on Calabrian life and stroll arm-in-arm with them into another week.

Cherrye Moore is a Calabria travel consultant and freelance writer living in southern Italy. She writes about travel on MNUI.com and about living and traveling in Calabria on her own site, My Bella Vita.
