Always looking for a great, one-tank staycation in and around New York, I hit the road today and headed south. It was a beautiful 60 degrees, the sun was shining and I thought the beach sounded like a great idea.
Two hours later, there I was in Spring Lake, New Jersey, just me and the seagulls and my wee cousin, the tiniest of wanderlust women. We spent the day looking for shells and playing chicken with the waves. Then her 3 year old little face looked at me as if to say, “OK, been here, done that, next.”
After getting the romantic notion of a wonderful Victorian seaside resort out of my head, I am ready for the next staycation and this time I hope it’s more exciting than Spring Lake. Sure, it’s a great place to visit if you’re 92 but the village/business district is about one block long and there isn’t much else.
So, what do you expect? Not all of the posts are supposed to be rave reviews. At least you’ll get honesty here, fellow wanderers.

Spring Lake is home to the Spring Lake 5 Mile Run, a race that circles the town beginning and ending at the beach front. It has more than 7,000 participants annually.
Short and to the point! I was probably never going to visit Spring Lake but at least now if I ever am invited there I know what to expect. I like a holiday where I’m not expected to do much to be honest but I would prefer to be somewhere where there is a choice of things for me to do if I want to.
Thanks for stopping by and if you are ever invited to NJ, then just drive an hour south of Spring Lake and head to Long Beach Island. Much better. You won’t be disappointed.
Hello – your friends are so right. Although it wasn’t windy while I was there, the dunes kept blowing onto the sidewalks so that little machines had to come and scoop up the sand and redeposit it onto the beach. A never-ending job, I would say.
Thanks for stopping by.
Well, I have been to Spring Lake many years ago. My friends told me windsurfing is a MUST over there in this season.
