It’s spring – bunnies and peeps are all over the place – kinda puts a smile on your face – just like a journey to the happiest place on Earth. I am a Disney convert down to my soul, a grown woman who still believes in fairytales. Disney World is my go-to destination for relaxation, escape and celebration and believe it or not, most of the time I fly solo.
Now, unless you are among those of us who sip the Mickey and Minnie kool-aid regularly, it may be a hard-sell to convince you that Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a great place to go to for a solo journey. The really cool thing is that if you go on your birthday, you get into any one of the parks for free. That’s a huge savings right there.
Now, don’t fight it once you arrive in this land of Oz, oops, I mean Mickey, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, whatever. Go with the flow.
You may think they are releasing happy gas into the atmosphere and in part, you would be right. As soon as you enter the Magic Kingdom, inhale the scent of vanilla and cinnamon. It’s a Disney secret but they actually have air cannons release wonderful, sugary aromas over Main Street. How can you not be happy here?
My biggest tip would be to stay in one of the hotels with a Monorail station such as the Grand Floridian (my personal fave) or the Polynesian. The pure convenience of proximity to the efficient Disney transportation system is a time-saver second to none.
Of course, these hotels are on the pricey side but remember my motto, “go big or stay home.” However, in these tough times, another option would be to stay at one of the budget hotels like Coronado Springs or Port Orleans. These are perfectly fine hotels on Disney property but they are a bit noisier because they cater to families. I have also stayed at the Wilderness Lodge and that is lovely. If this is going to be your first solo adventure to the House of Mouse, might I suggest the three weeks after Thanksgiving. It is relatively quiet; the lines are short; all of the parks are decorated for Christmas; and the Disney attitude is topped off with the Christmas spirit. Besides, it’s always cheaper to book then because they have special “Jolly Holiday” packages.

Packages, oh they are the bane of the solo travelers existence because they usually cost more for those flying solo; however, you must partake of the Disney dining plan. You pay once and forget about it. That’s right – breakfast, lunch and dinner………oh, and snacks too. You use your room key like a charge card and park pass all rolled into one and you can eat at practically any restaurant or snack bar without paying cash. It’s wonderful and a great value.
I am sticking to the necessities of life in this post because I will need several posts to give you insider tips for each of the parks. Now, as a solo traveler, the trip is always “all about me.” What better way to indulge than in the land of happy with spa treatments, and the Grand Floridian Hotel hosts one of the best spas this side of Eden. I have never had a bad massage there; in fact, I would venture to say that I have had some of the best massages ever at the GF Spa and the spa pedicures are to die for. It’s housed in a separate building away from the hotel and whether or not you are a guest of the hotel, you may use the Grand Floridian’s numerous swimming pools,
provided you have booked a spa treatment for the day. It’s also located quite close to the new Disney Wedding Pavilion, where young brides can live out their fantasy. It’s quite charming because once, as I walked back from the spa, a gilded coach with uniformed horsemen sauntered by, carrying a belle off to meet her groom.
There is so much more to say and in my next post look for dining tips and where to find the best fun for adults, yes, at Disneyworld. It’s the place where dreams really do come true!
